APPLE CRUMBLE

Let’s get ready to crumble! You can’t go wrong with an apple crumble, especially since it is so easy and quick to throw together. It is the perfect winter dessert, and will leave you feeling all warm inside with every bite of deliciously spiced fruit and crunchy golden crumb topping.

INGREDIENTS

For topping:

  • 1/2 cup flour

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/3 cup cold butter, cut into cubes

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Dash of salt

For filling:

  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 3 tablespoons milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Dash of salt

PREPARATION

1. Preheat oven to 190°C

2. In a bowl combine all the crumble ingredients with a fork or using your fingertips until it resembles small crumbs. 

3. Set aside in the refrigerator while you prepare the apple filling.

4. In a separate bowl, combine melted butter and flour until they are incorporated well together and the mixture is smooth. 

5. Add lemon juice, milk and vanilla and stir well to combine, then add the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt and mix it all together until well blended. 

6. Pour the butter mixture over the sliced apples and toss to coat. 

7. Prepare individual ramekins and, using a spoon, arrange some of the apple filling into the base of each ramekin.

8. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the filling.

9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. 

10. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving, but you’ll still want to eat it warm.

11. Best served hot with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of toffee or caramel syrup.

Notes:
You can substitute the apples for any other fruit you prefer, such as peaches, apricots or berries. 

For other fruit fillings, substitute the brown sugar for white granulated sugar instead and discard the lemon juice.

You can also used canned fruits if fresh fruit is not available to you.

You can also skip the filling steps and choose to combine your fruit with jam instead. For example, apricots combined with apricot jam for the base. 

You can serve the crumble dessert with custard as well.

You can prepare the dessert in a large baking dish instead of individual servings.

Will keep stored in refrigerator up to 5 days, microwave to warm it up before serving.
